Introduction to Adding and Subtracting Fractions With Common Denominators

A classroom with a teacher standing in front of a chalkboard with math problems written on it, while students watch him What fraction of students did well on the latest test?
In math class, Mike's teacher shares that 1/8 of the students received an A on the latest test and 3/8 of the students received a B. Mike wants to figure out what fraction of the class got either an A or B on the test. To do this, he'll have to add fractions. In this section, we'll use models to explore how to add and subtract fractions with common denominators.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this section, you will be able to:
  • Model fraction addition
  • Add fractions with a common denominator
  • Model fraction subtraction
  • Subtract fractions with a common denominator
